The dead was identified as Md Ashraful Islam, 22, a constable of Dinajpur Police Lines hailed from Borogram of Lalmonirhat district, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
Sources said police residing in the police lines heard gunshots at about 12:10am.
On search, they found Ashraful in a pool of blood in front of arsenal gate where Ashraful was guarding along with the other sentries.
Ashraful was rushed to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital where he died later.
At least seven bullets pierced his stomach, doctors said.
While contacted, Shujayet Hossain Kumar, Acting Police Super of Dinajpur, confirmed the death of Ashraful.
He, however, claimed that the constable committed suicide by shooting himself.
A four-member probe committee, led by Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Shanjit Kumar, has been formed to investigate into the incident.
