[mukto-mona] RE: Begum Zia Press Conference

It isn’t right for one flag.

It isn’t right for one currency.

It isn’t right for one government.

It isn’t right to conclude an important agreement without discussing this with the opposition or by a Referendum.

It is wrong to take Indian money [1 billion dollar credit line] to build/improve our transit/road system. That would make Indians a co owner of the system. It is wrong for our sovereignty.

It is wrong to involve the two governments [India/BD] to build the transit system.

It is wrong that we know nothing if our ports can be used by exporters to India [not just for Indian exports] – using Ctg/Mongla to send goods to India NE and mainland India.

Subject: Begum Zia Press Conference

Isn’t it the right time for one flag? Isn’t it the right time for one currency? Isn’t it the right time for visa free Asia? Isn’t it the right time for confidence building measures? Isn’t it the right time for zero tolerance policy toward terrorism and the terrorists? Isn’t it the right time to realize that 70% of Bangladesh is about to turn into a desert and we need a friendly India more than Copenhagen or any other country in the world? Isn’t it the time of Globalization, liberalization, free, and fair trade? Look what power hungry, short sighted, ill-read, badly advised, and narrow minded Begum Zia is onto?  Her press conference was filled with vitriol, vile, and senseless rhetoric. One Billion dollar credit at 1.7% interest- no good? Opening the border with Nepal, Bhutan, China, Burma, and India--no good? Opening Mangla and Chittagong ports for everybody- no good? Getting 250 Megawatts of electricity--no good? Stopping terrorism in South Asia-no good? Lifting tariff on 49 items—no good? Working on removing barriers and trust deficit--no good? Engaging in constructive engagement diplomacy and intense consultation on all issues--no good? What is she proposing? God help Bangladesh with leader like this. Simple answer is Bangladesh does not have any option. Complicated answer is tacit acceptance of Indian hegemony by quietly engaging them through bureaucratic, legal, cultural and diplomatic channels. The BNP leaning intellectuals are hell bent on politicizing the issue for vote bank and nothing else. Here is an example of our helplessness. In the morning on April 11th, 2001 some 300 BSF members invaded to occupy Bangladesh's border observation post at village Baroibari along the Raumari frontier of Kurigram district. A fierce fight broke out in the Bangladesh territory. The Indian government asked Sheih Hasina to withdraw the BDR from Padua and apologize to Indian prime minister over the phone for this misadventure. India demanded removal of the BDR DG and court martial of the rest. Sheikh Hasina refused to sack Brigedier Fazlur Rahman of BDR. Here is the interesting part that is hidden from the masses of the country by BNP.  The then BDR chief, Major Gen Fazlur Rahman, a staunch Jammaatee and BNP lover, with the help of ISI, in a clever and calculated strategic move, attacked India in 2001--right before the election. It was a windfall for BNP as they won 200 seats and routed the Awami league in the election. India card worked fabulously for BNP. Fazlur Rahman became the scape goat and the fall guy. Begum disowned him. BNP Secretary-General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan told the Times of India that the BDR's action at Padua was "almost certainly" cleared by Sheikh Hasina and the fact of the matter is Fazlur Rahman is a relative of Sheikh Hasina. The shameless, double-speaking, dubious, elements within the Khaleda/Nizami clique never miss an opportunity to tell the public that Awami league is soft on India. Point is militancy is futile. We can't even fight a third rate country like Myanmar—where is the wisdom of showing red-eye to India? There must be limit to Machiavellian politics and demagoguery—or is there? Bangladesh has proposed Asian High Way, which will enter from India through Jessore and into Myanmar through Teknaf. As a part of the country's 'Look East' policy, this route will go all the way to Bangkok which will provide Bangladesh with immense opportunities of trade between India, Bhutan, Nepal, Mayanmar and Thailand. What’s so unpatriotic about this picture?
