Terrorism by Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e-Islam Threatens Secular and Democratic Bangladesh

New York, May 16, 2013: Bangladesh was born as an independent, sovereign nation through a bloody 9-month long war in 1971. Three million people were killed and more than 200,000 women were raped by Pakistani military forces and their Bengali collaborators Jamaat-e-Islami Party. Armed cadres (Razakars, Al Badr, and Al Shams) – many of whom belong to the political party Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh – committed war crimes along with the Pakistani occupation forces during the war.

After 42 years, the trial of the war criminals has been initiated in Bangladesh under the International Crimes Tribunal Act. However, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, with the support of its allies Hefajat-e-Islam-e-Islam-e-Islam-e-Islam and BNP, are using terrorism to stop the trial and protect the war criminals. They have been attacking police forces with guns and bombs, and looting arms; setting fire on cars, buses, and trains with passengers on board; burning the national flag and destroying Martyr's monument. Lately, they have been attacking minority community and killing innocent people, burning their homes and destroying their temples in order to instigate communal riot in the country.

It is a well-known fact that, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has connection with international terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and Taliban of Afghanistan and Lashkar-E- Taibi of Pakistan. Jamaat's acts of terrorism, violence and treason have challenged the democratic and secular society as well as the sovereignty of Bangladesh. It is their hidden agenda to establish Sharia law and capture political power in the country to spread terror and destabilize the region.

The people of Bangladesh demand to ban Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and Hefajat-e-Islam-e-Islam-e-Islam-e-Islam to protect democratic and secular society; and build Bangladesh, a country of 160 million people, into a prosperous, peaceful, democratic, and secular Bangladesh. A secular and democratic Bangladesh is also essential for peace and stability in the Indian subcontinent as well as for global interest of the USA.

However, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, neither at the present time nor during liberation war accepted Bangladesh though they claim to belong to the country. Recent burning of the national flag is the proof of that. Therefore, they should be banned in Bangladesh as the Nazi party was banned in Germany after WWII.

We, the expatriate Bangladeshi community in the USA, support the people's demand to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e-Islam of Bangladesh in order to make Bangladesh a terror-free, peace loving, secular and democratic country.
