Re: [mukto-mona] Thousand and One Muslim Inventions That Shaped the World

Any invention or discovery cannot be random on the time line of the history of scientific and technological development. For example, electricity could not have been invented by the Greeks two thousand years ago. An invention or discovery can be accidental but such a breakthrough cannot be made before the time is ripe. Where science stands now will determine what invention or discovery is next in the queue.

Can religion halt scientific and technological progress? When 'church' is competing with the state, great damage can be caused. It has happened in the past and it is still happening.
In modern times the Jewish community-- probably historically the most hated one--contributed profusely in such fields. I don't see much has been done by the Indians in its entire history. The reason may be the priority the rulers chose. One interpretation of religion made them live in a closed society and spend time on theological and metaphysical theories.

In this global world things have changed. Both Hindus and Muslims and obviously people from other religious communities are in partnerships in the field of research. Salam is a great example. At least two Indian Americans got Nobel prize.

Thousand and one inventions made in as many Arabian Nights. That however excluded electricity, steam engine, gun powder and things of major importance. Fall of Constantinople initiated Roman Renaissance as artisans had to migrate westwards. Ibn Sina and many other innovators were called Jews when they lived. Even Ibn Khaldun the Tunisian described Arabians as uninnovative.

Glorious scientific inventions were made in the medieval Islamic years, but such scientific innovations also remarkably halted prematurely in the Islamic world? What happened? Could someone explain that?
In contrast, Christian and Jewish scientists kept going non-stop even after the Western scientific renaissance giving amazing discoveries for centuries. This is the question Muslims need to ask to themselves, in my view.

The 'Thousand and One Inventions' exhibition currently being showcased in the UK turns the spotlight on the golden era of Islamic civilization highlighting its scientific temperament and achievements and its contribution to Western renaissance.
A number of inventions were made in the medieval Islamic world, a geopolitical region that has at various times extended from Spain and Africa in the west to Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent in the east.
