Well, Ms. Majid, you answered my question, "And how long has the West been taking such advantage, not more than a few hundred years, right?" in one word, 'WRONG'. Could you explain your answer with some facts from history?
As for the USA, taking advantage of the inter- and intra-religion hatred in the Middle East could not have been more than 240 years, as the country was formed in 1776. In fact, it was no more than 183 years (the presidency of Andrew Jackson).
The French influence has been in west and north Africa since the early part of the 17th century, but much later in the Middle East. The British influence in the Middle East has been mostly since early 20th century. If you know history better, please educate me and others in this forum. I would much appreciate it.
Please also educate us on the history of how long the hatred and conflicts between Jews, Christians and Muslims and between Sunni and Shia Muslims of the land of the Middle East have been going on. Please do not dodge this issue. Because it is critical to be honest and open with facts, without which at least I would not expect the injustice, hatred and barbaric behavior among too many humans that we have been witnessing to go away.
Finally, please do me a favor; do not put me in the category of what you called 'communal crowd.' Let me give you this: I genuinely believe that one aspect of the progress of humans toward civilization is to dislike (phobia) the stupidity, injustice, hatred and atrocity that can be found in most religions. If you call that 'communal', you have a language problem, if not worse; never mind where you might have taught what language.

Okay, you may not have a Ph D in History, but you are educated enough (with a PhD in another subject about which we would have been glad to know) to know the outlines of History of Civilization. Specially considering the fact that you guys write about nothing else -- absolutely NOTHING else -- other than religion, how bad and bloody Islam is or has been, one would have thought that you would pick up a little more academic knowledge about the subject.

I also think that it would be better if the person who posted a link wrote a comment or two about the subject of the link. However, I believe Ms. Majid is actually smart enough to see why this post by Mr. Guha is worth watching, especially by people who seem the blame the West for the woes of the Middle Eastern barbarians. Clearly, those people in the Middle East have been killing and committing atrocities on their own people for thousands of years for the nonsense of their religions; and Islam is actually only one of three such religions, with an additional problem of Shia vs Sunni. Just think, how long the Shia vs Sunni hatred has been in action! Just think, is the West the root cause of the inter-religion and inter-sect hatred in the Middle East, or the West has been taking advantage of the hatred that already existed there for thousands of years?
