The court of metropolitan sessions’ judge of Dhaka on Monday sent two serving secretaries and two retired top bureaucrats to jail after they had surrendered to the court in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for selling 18 government houses in the city’s posh areas at throwaway prices.

The judge, Azizul Haque, asked the jail authorities to provide division for the government officials in accordance with the jail code.

The detainees are former secretary of the housing and public works ministry and now officer on special duty at the establishment ministry SM Jafrullah, former secretary of the civil aviation and tourism ministry and now an OSD at the establishment ministry Shahid Alam, who also served as chairman of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, retired secretary of the housing and public works ministry Iqbal Uddin Chowdhury, who too served as Rajuk chairman, and former director (estate) of Rajuk Golam Nabi.

The court on September 25 issued warrants for arrest of 19 people, including former commerce minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and the four officials, as they were shown absconding in the charge-sheet filed against 25 people with the court on September 20.

With the four detained on Monday, six people have so far been remanded in custody in the case for selling/buying 18 government houses at throwaway prices to accrue financial benefits and thus inflicting a loss of more than Tk 127.66 crore to the exchequer.

Earlier, former housing minister Mirza Abbas and Rajuk’s former finance director Humayun Khan were arrested and sent to prison in the case, the police said.

The court on Monday also asked the police to confiscate the moveable property of the remaining 19 accused and report to it on October 4 about execution of the order.

The accused in the case still on the run are Amir Khasru, former executive engineer of Rajuk Reazul Monir, former executive engineer of public works department Syed Mahfuz Ahmed, fromer superintendent engineer of Rajuk Mohammad Ali, former joint secretary of information ministry Mir Mosharraf Hossain, former chief engineer of Rajuk Emdadul Islam, former project director of Rajuk’s Purbanchal Town Development Project Abdus Sadek, former superintendent engineer of PWD Ziauddin Ahmed, former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s political secretary Harris Chowdhury, former lawmaker Kazi Anwar Hossain, Cocola Foods managing director Shukkur Miah, chairman of a real estate firm SM Anwar Hossain, Chittagong Awami League leader Afsar Uddin’s wife Hasna Ahmed, Ambia Group managing director Abul Kashem, former secretary general of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies Ali Haider Chowdhury, Mehedi Hasan of Orion Group, Bashundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam, Nurus Sofa, and Shafiqur Rahman Kiron.
