Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) today
predicted that the death toll caused by the tropical
storm Sidr may rise 10,000.

"According to our past experiences and reports, there
is a possibility that the death toll of the severe
cyclonic storm will rise over 10,000," BDRCS Chairman
Mohammad Abdur Rob told a press conference at its head
office this morning.

He also said they, through the Geneva-based
International Federation, have already appealed for Tk
400 million in international assistance for the
cyclone-victims of the country and the final appeal
will be made by Friday next after assessment of the
losses.

"Hopefully, proper response will be received about our
appeal within a day or two," said BDRCS chief.

Five teams, comprising BDRCS and International
Federation officials, have been sent to the affected
areas for quick assessment of losses caused by the
early Friday's powerful cyclone, he informed.

"We will make a final appeal for international
assistance after receiving the reports from the
teams," Rob added.

Appreciating the government's efforts in facing the
disaster that mainly hit the country's coastal
districts, the BDRCS boss said they have already
started work to dispatch relief materials to the
affected areas. Around 42,000 volunteers of the Red
Crescent Society have been worked continuously in the
coastal areas during the storm and these efforts saved
the lives of many people, he added.
