RE: [mukto-mona] Fwd. Re. " the other, silent genocide in 1971?"

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/45142

Dear all,
As a layman I understand that Genocide is a mass-killing in order to wipe out an ethnic community. Dr. Rummel's quoate of Yahya Khan has clearly established that the Pakistani Junta had Genocide in mind when Yahya hinted at killing 3 million Bengalis. After this, I am a little surprised that Dr. Rummel was not sure whether 1971 events were Liberation War or Civil war. In a Civil War, the aggrieved party goes first in attack. In 1971 it was the Pakistan Army that attacked first and killed innocent unarmed people in thousands in one night alone on March 25. Bengalis regrouped later and launched the guerrila war. The Biharies who were displaced Muslims from India, like the Jamate Islami and other Muslim communal parties were declared enemies of Bengali nationalism. They enthusiaticaly allied themselves with the Pakistani aggressors and took part in Genocide of the Bengalis. In the process they got what they deserved in a war situation. It can not be termed as Genocide. Bengali guerrilas and angry mob killed those Biharies who like the Jamate Islami, Rajakar, Al-Badar, Al-Shams etc. took part in killing, raping, arson, and looting. Had it been a case of Genocide, the Biharies who are still living in Bangladesh as Pakistani citizen, could not have done so. As a matter of fact Bengali psyche which took shape over thousands of years with the best spiritual elements of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam, basically loathes inhumanity. They are incapable of thinking Genocide.
Let me set two examples from my own experience in 1971. I was working with Bangladesh Television. We had a wonderful Sarongi player. During non co-operation days before the crackdown on March 25, the situation was getting tense. That man got panicked for life. We immediately took measures to ensure his safety. After the take over by the Pakistan Army, the same man turned into a demon. Obviously he and his family met their fate within hours of Liberation. During the Liberation War, I spent a month at my father-in-laws house at Chittagong. One day my father-in-law went to the city to see his sister's family leaving all of us in tension. He came back in the late afternoon. His face indicated that he saw something terrible. Then he narrated how two Biharies shot down a farmer working in the field from the running bus in which he too was travelling. I remember how the story immediately aroused my own killing instinct. Can it be called a Genocide motive?
I am afraid Dr. Rummel's research on Bangladesh Genocide is incomplete and he should in the first place find out why this Genocide has remained unearthed by the community of Genocide scholars.
