Mrintunjoy and Jhuma Halder are one among millions of Indians who survive on daily wage--recently they had a first child-it was a girl! So Mr Haldar decided to kill her!
Killing of the new born girl child is nothing new to the Indians--aain i akbari had mention of this tradion among the Hindus because girl childs are always unwanted in a Hindu family. British passed laws to prevent it in the name of religious tradition. Anyhow, bottomline is same- in a Hindu family birth of a cow is more welcome than birth of girl child even today!
Such pathetic condition of women in Hindu society is a sad story of evolution. During the time of RG Veda, discrimination against women was not that visible as it will be in the later part of new Vedas like Atharba Vedas. During 6th century in Manu Smriti, it become ultimate and cruel which has destroyed Hindu civilization. Then reversing of wheel started with Ram Mohan, Vidyasagar, Vivekananda and Dayananda Swaraswati--although they interpreted religion in positive light, except for Vidyasagar and Ram Mohan, other reformers didn't work enough for women liberation and they wanted reform staying very well inside the boundary of religion. Looking at this kind of incident, I sometimes wonder, whether reformed Hinduism has ever been able to influence general mass like Mritunjoy and Jhuma.
Some may disagree with me stating that Mritunjoy took such drastic decision because he is poor and knew that he will not be able to afford dowry. So one must analyze this incident from economic perspective--but should we? Murdering of housewives are common place among all classes of people-there is no discrimination between rich and poor on this matter. Then why we should play the game of self-deception by ignoring a disease in Hinduism?
Hinduism in its core essence is a religion of self--it allows the freedom of everybody to select his/her own path of realization. It does not emphasize on religious texts but self-realization.
And what positive realization a man can acheive by being cruel and discriminatory to women?
