[mukto-mona] Mamata raps Pranab

Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has reasons to criticise award of Padmabibhushan to Pranab Mukherjee who was infamously responsible for bucking up Dhirubhai Ambani to become a monopoly capitalist through manipulation of import duties to help the Reliance group. Shubhabrata Bhattacharya's breaking expose in Sunday and Telegraph in the 1980s Paranjoy Guhathakurta's analyses are on print. He came Rajya Sabha MP sheerly by manipulation and money power. But for Adhir Chowdhury he could not be a Lok Sabha member in 2004, the first time winning an election.

Here goes a news in Daily Pioneer today

Pranab honour makes Mamata see red

Padma Vibhushan to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee may have inspired Congress-led Government's crisis manager "to work more for the service of the people", but it hasn't really pleased the Opposition Trinamool Congress, as well as the people from across the sections of society - albeit for diametrically opposite reasons.

While Trinamool Congress is unhappy with the "politicisation of country's highest awards", people from apolitical world feel "Pranab babu deserved more than what he has been given and for what he has done for the country's image."

From doctors to lawyers, to professors, all alike think that the least the Government could have done for Mukherjee, who for various reasons was kept out of the two of country's most important posts, was to give him Bharat Ratna when Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu refused the award.

At a time when it seemed the Trinamool chief had sunk her differences with the External Affairs Minister and the number two in the Central Government, the former launched a frontal attack on the UPA leaderhsip for giving away the country's highest awards "to people in power and not to those who really deserve them."

On whether the party was not happy with Mukherjee being awarded, the Trinamool leader said by giving awards to those in power or those who were close to the Central Government had once again shown "its lack of integrity." She added: "He did not deserve this award also for the lack of association with common people - be it not visiting Nandigram, nor Singur and Tsunami hit areas."

It is not only Mukherjee but also some other names figuring in the award list that have incensed Banerjee. According to her, industrialist Ratan Tata should have been the last person to have received such awards, for his role in Singur. Swimmer-turned-CPM Legislator Bula Chowdhury is another person who should not have been given the Padma Bhushan, because it was not clear whether she got it as a swimmer or as a CPM MLA.

On Tata, the Trinamool leadership felt the industrialist was given the award to appease the CPM in Bengal. "The communists are behind this," the Trinamool leaders said. Banerjee also anticipated a "threat to my life because I have raised this issue."

Seeking an immediate resignation of Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for presiding over the "award fiasco", the Trinamool leader was quoted as saying, "the Home Minister must resign and a high level inquiry must be ordered in the award fiasco."

According to the Opposition leader Partho Chattopadhyay, the Trinamool workers would launch a protest march on Sunday where "we shall burn the effigies of those who did not deserve to be awarded." The Tata patriarch is one of them, party sources said.

However, the people differed with the UPA leadership's policy of awards for different reasons. "A man of Pranab Mukherjee's caliber deserved more than what he got because, both internally and internationally, he has given his Government a semblance of respect and stability," felt Saurav Roy, a lawyer. A political science professor from Presidency College said: "If at all one has to decide in terms of awarding a politician in power with such awards, then Mukherjee is the most deserving candidates for Bharat Ratna."
