Sector Commanders Should Not Take Partisan Political Position

News papers have reported that Sector commanders of the Liberation War during a convention of freedom fighters of Barisal division yesterday called for restoring the constitution of 1972 and vowed to continue their movement until trial of all war criminals is complete. They urged the Election Commission not to register anti-liberation war forces and religion-based organisations as political parties and called for preparing a list of collaborators. The Sector Commanders Forum, as part of its nationwide campaign for the trial of war criminals, organised the convention yesterday morning at Barisal Auditorium. Sheikh Qutubuddin, convener of Barisal district command of Muktijoddha Sangsad, presided over the meeting and the programme. AMG Kabir Bhulu, member secretary of Barisal Muktijoddha Sangsad, gave the inaugural speech.Rashed Khan Menon, president of Workers Party, said like the time of the Liberation War the entire nation is now uniting for the trial of war criminals. He said, "The present caretaker government is directing reforms in political parties and various state organs… then why not start the trial of war criminals?"Air Vice-marshal (retd) AK Khandaker Bir Uttam, deputy commander in chief of the Liberation War, said if the war criminals were brought to justice, corruption would not have spread all over the country since corruption increases if there is no legal action against the criminals.Sector Commander Maj Gen (retd) KM Safiullah Bir Uttam said governments that were formed after the assassination of  Sheikh Mujibur Rahman forgave the war criminals as the Bangabandhu passed the Collaboration Act on January 12, 1972 and started trial of war criminals. Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta called for restoration of the non-communal constitution of 1972 and said vested quarters often used and changed the constitution to serve their interest and it should be resisted.

We observe that some of the major demands of the sector commanders represent partisan political views such as demand for restoration of 1972 constitution and banning religion based political parties. These are demands of some, basically left parties. Sector commanders should not uphold party positions on such crucial issues and leave these to the politicians to settle. 1972 constitution went through five time amendments during Awami League first rule and several times later by other governments. These  changes reflected the changing circumstances and realities .We do not think it possible to go back wholesale to 1972 constitution by restoring socialism and hard-line secularism. In any case we urge the sector commanders not to involve in such issues as they should remain above controversies for their own and nation's sake.
