The Almighty granted Bangladesh a miracle by bringing some decent people into government in early 2007. But the miracle also happened during a time of great economic challenges. And to further complicate matters, Bangladesh was hit by 2 floods and a cyclone.
As we all know the price of essential food items have been increasing at an alarming rate. This increase is global and widespread. Just today I read that Egypt is temporarily suspending rice exports to satisfy internal demand. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080328/wl_africa_afp/egypteconomyricecement ) Vietnam and India are also decreasing rice exports to satisfy their internal demand. This only points to further increases in rice prices for Bangladesh.
The CTG made some mistakes last year. But their overall agenda has been with good intention and is producing benefits. Thanks to the removal of corruption from the Chittagong ports, the efficiency has increased tremendously. The good stewardship of Bangladesh Bank has kept the value of taka stabilized, which has made our exports competitive even with giants like India and China. In fact our industrial sector is witnessing tremendous growth.
But how much long can the people take the increasing prices? An unfortunate outcome is that the CTG will be blamed for things that are out of their control; the corrupt will use the current hardships to their advantage; and the people of Bangladesh will ultimately shoulder all the loss. It is not fair, but sometimes life plays strange games.
