Subject: CPM threat to Little Magazine Mela organisers

Premangsu Dasgupta, Convenor, Little Magazine Samannoy Mancha, has asked me to forward the following message:
During 6-9 March 2008, the Little Magazine Mela Committee, Balarambati, Singur, Hooghly, organised a Little Magazine Mela in Balarambati. The President of the Mela Committee is Mudassar Niyaz, who is the owner of a Printing Press in the area. Besides the sale of books and magazines, cultural functions and discussions were also held over the four days.
Two days after the mela ended, on the night of March 11 (Tuesday), local CPI(M) goons stormed into the printing press owned by Mudassar Niyaz around 8:30 pm and ransacked the premises, hurling abuses and threats all the while. Among the articles destroyed was the harmonium that had been used in the cultural functions at the mela. As they left, they repeated their abuses and threatened Mudassar Niyaz with dire consequences..
According to the organisers, the local thugs had tried to disrupt the proceedings at the mela where people from Kolkata and other places had been invited to speak. One of the speakers, Miratun Nahar, who - in commemorating International Women's Day in her speech - had talked about the heroic role of the women of Singur, was heckled and abused throughout and had to be escorted under cover to the railway station.
