Dr. Mushi, I will Remember You with Respect

                                                   

Professor Mushi had a decent and respectable life at BAU. He was one of my Botany teachers, the single course I had taken in plant science, more than forty years now in the history. Taxonomy was taught by Professor Arshad, Mr. Hai taught the structural arrangement of leaves, development of flowers. There was a fourth teacher with a PhD. He looked very handsome; I remember his turtleneck sweater but I forgot his name and the area he taught. But no student of Dr. Mushi can forget anything of him. Of all the four teachers, only he used to pronounce the word, Botany, "ˈbä-tə-nç, ˈbät-nç"appropriately.

 

He taught the Tissue section. After more than forty years, I may have forgotten the spellings of the words, schlerenchyma and cholenchyma , but I still remember exactly how he used to pronounce them.  His volume of speech used to be couple of dBs above the normal range. But his pronounciation was so good and vivid that there was no way for anybody to miss a single word during his lecture.

 

In the campus, he did not have any enemy of any sort. He did not hurt anybody. He was not a person to waste time by gossiping. In the Teachers' Council meeting he talked only when he noticed the discussions were heading to a wrong direction. His intervention always resolved any chaotic discussion in the council. Such was the stature of Dr. Mushi.

 

He was a good listener. He was a problem solver. He opened mouth for correction. I heard many a times his graduate students talking about a big heart inside Dr. Mushi. I am sure Bangladesh Agricultural University will bid a memorable farewell to Professor Mushi. People will do it at the urge from their hearts.
