[mukto-mona] Hollow Men

The Jadavpur University Executive Council, a bastion of CPI(M), which is fast drifting away from overwhelming majority of students of JU, rejected the West Bengal's Home Secretary A M Chakraborty's probe report that the allegation of JU Karmachari Samsad, obviously a CPI(M)-dominated employees' Union ( no employment in the JU non-teaching staff took place in 30 years without approval of CPI(M) party fraction that dictares the JUKS) that the victorious students at the student union election in 2007 vandalised the JUKS office as if they are all storm troopers.

The structure of JUEC is such that it will be dominated by nominees of ruling party in West Bengal. Most of the ex-students are not enrolled as voters like the University of Calcutta. In other words, those who work and stay in Kolkata and around and politically-interested are its voters. Needless to say, CPI(M) in West Bengal's ability to manage victories is without parallel. So JUEC is CPI(M)'s reserve.

Pl read the news in The Telegraph today and the news that exposed JUKS.
I am reading T S Eliot's Hollow Men (1925), the first para of which reads.

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Even after all this, if anyone with a conscientious bend of mind considers CPI(M) as a Left party, I have only to say freedom of expression cannot be questioned.

JU discards inquiry report By Our Special Correspondent 1 May 08 (http://telegraphindia.com/1080501/jsp/calcutta/story_9211841.jsp)
The executive council of Jadavpur University has virtually discarded the report of the one-man commission that probed violence on the campus in April 2007.
The council, one of the two highest decision-making bodies of the university, on Wednesday described Ashoke Mohan Chakraborty's findings and recommendations as "inconclusive" and "irrelevant".
The commission, set up by the government, had submitted its report in December.
The council, controlled by pro-CPM members, suggested that vice chancellor P.N. Ghosh independently take steps to stop violence on the campus.
"The commission has failed to identify the main culprits for lack of witnesses. It has suggested that the university authorities initiate a further inquiry. In such a situation, we feel the university should take measures on its own to ensure that violence does not recur," said a member of the council.
The commission had found out that We the Independents and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students, two anti-CPM students' bodies in the university, were not solely responsible for the violence on the night April 5, 2007.
The commission did not recommend punishment for any student and questioned the role of an employees' union.
The council punished four students for misbehaving with a reveller on December 31. Two of them have been expelled from their hostel for two years, while another has been expelled for a year. The fourth student has been warned. His conduct will be assessed after six months.

JU vandalism: Report blames Karmachari Sansad Express news service 10  Jan 08 (http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/JU-vandalism-Report-blames-Karmachari-Sansad/259880/)
Kolkata, January 9 A report submitted by Ashok Mohan Chakraborty, Chief Secretary, Higher Education department, to the Executive Committee of Jadavpur University has held the CPM-backed Karmachari Sansad responsible for encouraging vandalism and ruckus on the campus.
The report, discussed today at the monthly meeting of the varsity, nullified the involvement of any student in the April 5 incident.
In April, the campus was on the boil following clashes between the Karmachari Sansad and students of the science faculty. Some SFI supporters and Karmachari Sansad activists attacked a victory rally organised by We The Independent (WTI) supporters after winning the science faculty union election. Classes remained suspended for days and examinations were cancelled as a result of the incident.
The 33rd finding of the commission holds Karmachari Sansad leader Swapan Ghosh responsible for encouraging vandalism on the campus on the night of April 5. The finding reads: "It could be gathered from the depositions of the guards that they were advised by estate manager Swapan Ghosh to stay away and observe the activity of the miscreants from a distance."
The same night the Karmachari Sansad office on JU campus was also ransacked. Ghosh lodged a complaint against WTI students at the Jadavpur police station accusing them of being involved. The report states miscreants from outside carried out the activity.
The Sansad had also complained that Rs 60,000 in cash went missing from their office locker. But the committee has rubbished the allegation sating, "The commission is surprised to know that the Karmachari Sansad office kept so much liquid cash in the office."
"We will take up the matter in detail at the EC meeting in the last week of January," said Pro Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University Siddhartha Dutta.
However, university authorities are not sure whether the council will initiate an inquiry against the Karmachari Sansad.
Four students suspended
Jadavpur University, at an executive council meeting on Wednesday, suspended four students who were allegedly involved in hooliganism on December 3, 2007, in a inebriated state. The hostel students, two each from the engineering and arts faculties, came out on the main road and allegedly misbehaved with a few passers-by. The university, after the dean of students Rajat Ray's interim report, found the students guilty. The varsity authorities have asked the students to explain their conduct to the university on January 14. Three of the students are pursuing their undergraduate degrees while one is completing his post-graduation. Partho Pratim Biswas, Executive Committee member of Jadavpur University, said will not tolerate any hooliganism by students.
