AT THE 19th party Congress in Coimbatore in March, the CPI( M) had adopted a resolution asking party members to refrain from holding ostentatious marriages and vulgar display of wealth. Forget the message percolating down to the cadres, it hasn't affected the top even. It was at the Coimbatore Congress that Kerala's Home and Tourism minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was elected to the party's Politburo, a sign of his increasing clout in the party. Yet he found nothing wrong in flaunting his wealth at a pre- marriage party and post- wedding reception, which if news reports and Opposition charges are to be believed, was even attended by people with dubious connections in Kerala. Chief minister Achutanandan has already frowned on the happenings but if party bosses at AKG Bhavan seek an explanation, the minister has the perfect answer. Just as the Tourism portfolio involves constant interaction with Kerala's hugely successful tourism industry, the Home portfolio necessarily means that he keep in regular touch with the state's soaring and highly lucrative crime industry.
