Nine of the deaths occurred among workers at companies supplying goods and

62-percent owned by Telenor.

Norwegian telecoms firm Telenor said Wednesday it had uncovered nine
job-related deaths among workers at its suppliers in Bangladesh. Two other
persons were hit by persons driving Telenor cars, and killed.
Telenor's Jon Fredrik Baksaas apologized for "each and every" death at the
company's suppliers in Bangladesh.

Telenor, shaken by a Danish documentary last month that revealed unsafe
and often miserable working conditions at Telenor's suppliers in
Bangladesh, launched an investigation of its own.

It released the results of that probe in a press statement from Telenor
chief executive Jon Fredrik Baksaas. Nine of the deaths occurred among
workers at companies supplying goods and services to Grameenphone, founded
by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and 62-percent owned by Telenor.

Baksaas said Telenor was apologizing for each and every death.

"As I've said previously, this hurts us, and better systems and control
routines for monitoring the company's suppliers have high priority,"
Baksaas said.

Four of the deaths have been reported previously, but five were unknown to
Telenor. The deaths were caused by falls, heart failure, contact with
electrified cable and snake bites.

Telenor said Grameenphone was taking steps to improve first aid procedures
on the job, along with worker health and hygiene. It also was stressing
the use of safety equipment among workers, safety training and traffic
safety.
