Former BNP state minister Ziaul Haque Zia was on Tuesday sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 13 years for amassing illegal wealth and hiding assets in the wealth statement submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission.
M Sirajul Islam, the judge of the special judge’s court 7 set up on the Jatiya Sangsad complex, also jailed Zia’s wife Nasima Haque and son Mushfiqul Haque Joy for three years each for helping him in committing the offence. The court ordered confiscation of Zia’s assets of Tk 12.81 crore, which was found beyond his known sources of income.
The court also fined Zia Tk 10 lakh and Nasima and Mushfiqul Tk 1 lakh each. If they fail to pay the fine, Zia will need to serve one more year and his wife and son six months each in jail.
The sentences against the family will come into execution after their surrender or arrest as they are in hiding.
All of them were earlier sentenced on charges of tax evasion.
The commission’s assistant director Manjurul Alam filed the graft case with the Ramna police on November 22, 2007 against Zia and his wife, and their son.
According to the prosecution, Zia amassed illegal wealth of Tk 12.81 crore beyond his known sources of income and concealed wealth of Tk 5.36 crore in the wealth statement.
