"Catastrophe" is not the word, Mr. Chakrabarty. It is a "chronic disease." India was suffering and is still suffering from the chronic disease of hatred; the caste system being one of the most remarkable forms of hatred. It certainly is politically incorrect to say that the British rule actually helped the Indians.

Didn't it take a British ruler to stop the Hindu widow-burning practice? Didn't it take a British ruler to allow Hindu widows to remarry? Of course, arguments can be made that Indians were involved too in making these changes. But the fact is that even today it is against the Hindu culture for widows to remarry.

Look at the aspects of irresponsibility in India even today.

Let me just give one example. When a road accident injures or kills someone in India, the poor driver needs to run away from the scene in order to save his life from the mob. The mob not only gets cruel against the driver, they block highways, damage vehicles owned by totally innocent people, and even hurt people who had nothing to do with the accident.

Many more examples could be found that would suggest that Indians needed good rulers with strong sticks, which holds true even today to a certain extent. The British were not there to be good or perfect rulers for the Indians, they were there for their own interests. However, there are ample arguments that can be made to show that the Mughals would have been worse.
