The people do not make mistakes: Moeen

Army chief general Moeen U Ahmed, following the swearing in of the newly elected government on Tuesday, said "the people" do not err in taking a decision. "They were not mistaken in '69 and in '71. And this time as well they did not make any mistake," said Moeen, who played a key role in the country's political changeover on Jan. 11, 2007.

He told bdnews24.com at Bangabhaban shortly after the swearing in of the new cabinet headed by prime minister Sheikh Hasina: "On January 12 in 2007, we promised a fair election within two years. And now at the end of two years we are handing power to an elected government."

The army chief, who backed the two-year interim government of chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, said, "This is the great success of my life in the service. The success goes to the entire nation."

"We finished preparing a new voter roll within the speediest time," he said of the army's major role in holding the election. Asked what he would expect of the new government, he said, "We want Bangladesh to be a middle income country."

The army chief put emphasis on developing human resources, terming it "the number one capital" of the country.
