Senior police officials in Chapainawabganj, including additional deputy inspector general Obaidul Huq and police superintendent Nazrul Hossain, Saturday afternoon visited Boalia at Gomastapur in the district to investigate an incident of beating a suspected thief by the union chairman, a ruling Awami League leader.
Villagers said the senior police officials visited to the place after some daily newspapers had on Friday and Saturday reported that one Tobarak Hossain, 35, a suspected thief, was hung on a tree and beaten mercilessly by Zillur Rahman, the union council chairman, and his people.
The police officials talked with Zillur and a number of villagers who had witnessed the incident on July 11 in which Tobarak, a mechanic, was beaten overnight being hung on a mango tree on charges of stealing shallow tube well machines.
The union council chairman said it was done to elicit information from Tobarak and four shallow tube well machines were recovered based on his statement. Two more machines are yet to be traced.
The Gomastapur police officer-in-charge, Babar Ali, said the police on hearing of the incident had tried to rescue Tobarak, but failed to do so in the face of resistance put up by several hundred villagers.
Tobarak, who is now staying in his in-laws at Kalyanpur in the town after treatment in General Hosptial, brushed aside the allegations against him and said Zillur and Shofiqul Amin had tortured him over previous enmity.
Tobarak’s father Abdul Quayum has filed a case with the Gomastapur police Friday evening. None was arrested till Saturday afternoon.
Witnesses said the villagers were divided over the issue and the majority of them were in favour of the chairman.
