1. This story by Fatemolla is not only a good one, it is a powerful one too. Islam bashers will see this story as one that attempts to glorify Islam unjustifiably. On the other hand, Islamic fundamentalists will see this as a story that has distorted Islam. In this story no distinction has been made between two pillars of Islam viz., Hajj and Jakat (giving). Moreover, going to Rangpur to feed the Monga affected hungry people has been used as a proxy for Hajj.
2. This is a timely story. In a few days the rich Muslims will be in a big competition over buying sacrificial cows. They will do this at a time when people affected by hurricane Sidr have not yet been able to come back to their previous normal life. My friend MMR Jalal was telling me yesterday that for election purposes (local Bangladeshi associations) the Bangladeshi community had spent about one hundred thousand dollars. We want to earn power for this life and piety for after-life! We hardly care about how my fellow people are doing!
3. Matter of the fact is that at least one interpretation of all religions is that it is not all about buying tickets for heaven. Much of it is about serving the distressed humanity. In Hinduism one synonym of God is Doridro-Narayan with the connotation that God lives among the poor. Rabindranath has said in one of his famous poems
"Jethay thake sobar odhom deener hote deen
seikhane je choron tomar raje----
sobar pichhe, sobar niche, so-harader majhe."
