New Humanist Update #82 (30 January 2008)
A short update from New Humanist: In our latest web exclusive,
technology writer Bill Thompson asks what the consequences might be of
social networkers revealing their unbelief by marking themselves as
"atheist" on their profiles. There's been much anxiety recently about
how revealing our personal details on Facebook can leave us open to
snooping, identity fraud and such like, so what could happen if you
mark yourself down as an atheist? Do you risk being blacklisted by
potential employers and the CIA or, as Bill suggests, could you be
helping to raise the profile of atheism?
In other news, we're co-hosting an event tomorrow (Thursday 31 January)
at the RSA entitled "How to Repair Democracy in Britain". It will
feature Professor Stein Ringen, who writes about liberty in our current
issue, Andrew Tyrie MP and Paul Skidmore of think tank Demos
discussing, well, how to repair democracy in Britain. It's at 1pm
tomorrow and you can find all the details by following the link below.
We're hard at work producing the next issue of New Humanist, due out at
the beginning of March, but in the meantime keep your eye on our lively
blog for all the latest news, silly and serious, from the world of
religion and get stuck into our January/February issue, which features
great stuff from David Attenborough, Steve Jones, Laurie Taylor and
Elizabeth Wilson.
