Re: [ALOCHONA] US$5.2 Billion Dollar Underground Train System in Bangladesh. Is it a good plan?

Dear Readers,
I have felt very uneasy since I read the news of the underground
railway. Mr Chowdhury has correctly pointed out the risks. Feasibility
studies might give the green signal. However, the fact is that
underground systems have shown to be less successful in alluvial
plains compared to hard crystalline rocks because even the Metro in
Kolkata had experienced a slump (caving in) of the structure in South
Kolkata.
Maintenance is another problem which would entail huge sums of money
in recurrent costs. In the context of Bangladesh, resource constraints
will not support costly maintenance of infrastructure. The whole of
Dhaka city is hardly supplied with 50% sewage and sanitation
facilities, befitting a metropolis. It is plagued with lack of
drainage, channels for storm-water expulsion, receeding water table,
lack of safe drinking water and electricity. Above the ground, an
immediate priority should be a coordinated, streamlined traffic system
with more large vehicles (buses and double-deckers) for mass
transport. Maybe a circular railway above the ground, linking
important terminuses would be a more viable option than an underground
railway, that could be underutilized due to mass phobia of bombs,
threats and certainly, mismanagement.

Dhaka should look towards rapid transport system above the ground,
upgradation of railways and waterways which would be ecologically and
financially feasible. Planning for the future should always be forward
looking and doable. Metro rail, especially undergroung metro-rail
system is quite impractical in the face of escalating prices and
violence.

So,....Please CTG think twice before you commit this plan as far as
Bangladesh is concern. Try to find alternatives with fly over bridge
system where trains can be run.
