Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Pakistan: A country orphaned at birth

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/45983

yes i agree. but there is a deep seated mistrust of the muslims by the hindus, and of the hindus by the muslims. unfortunately, this is a reality as of today. this needs to be addressed. as the hindus see it, religious minded muslims have a compulsion to convert others and also to see hindus as kafirs. that is because the quran sharif says so, or so believe a large number of the faithful muslims, ably egged on by the semi-literate (even in their religious tenets !!! ) mullahs whose primary interest is the expansion of their religion. since hinduism doesnt take converts that compulsion is not there. so the extremist vhp and bajrang dal types are limited in numbers.

because of large scale illiteracy (compared to hindus, sikhs and christians) and madrasa based education, employment potential for muslims is limited. this fact makes them take to crime and that shows up muslims as lawbreakers disproportionate to their numbers. this fact is taken advantage of by the hindu extremists and is fuel to their anti muslim bias. the earlier generation of muslims openly celebrated when pakistan won against india in cricket. obviously it did not make them dear to the hindus. happily the younger generation of muslims have no such baggage.

this is the present status. it is going to be a slow and torturous journey to build trust between the two communities. i often find myself in a minority of one when i gun for hindu muslim unity in india. we need pluralism.

the muslim elite in india need to analyse the fact that christians who associated themselves till 60 yrs ago with the ruling british are not mistrusted or hated, while the muslims whose rule ended a century and a half ago are seen as the descendants of oppressive muslim rulers. this perception needs to be changed. muslims need to take some initiative in this respect, even if they think it is not a fair assessment. many things are not fair in real life.

christianity also propagates conversions and believes in one book and their god being the only god. but their methods are far different from what wahabism is trying to do today. the concept of "my god is the only true god" is out of place in an educated and relatively far more enlightened world of today. sadly book bound religions cannot change their stance and that is their tragedy.

muslims' association with the congress party has not paid them any real dividends. that party catered to the vociferous bigots and mullahs, believing they are the voice of the community and did real harm to the average muslims and especially the women. i am ashamed of the fact that modi murdered innocent muslims, but after that there have been no communal riots in gujarat. every party has its own strong and weak points. this does not mean i am canvassing for the bjp. it is just a statement of fact.

more harm is done by the silence of the majority of the good people than by the actions of the crooked minority. this truth applies equally to all communities. india as whole is suffering because of that. more so the muslim community.
