[ALOCHONA] Hasina: Could lose sense of hearing soon

Hasina to lose hearing if not treated in couple of days: doctor
United News of Bangladesh . Dhaka 10/3/08

Detained Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina may be hearing-impaired if not provided proper treatment within a day or two, her personal physician Dr Pran Gopal Dutta said after examining her latest health condition at the makeshift jail on Sunday.

‘Sheikh Hasina became totally deaf in her left ear and she hears ‘very little’ in her right ear. At present she tried to understand others’ voice by reading the lips,’ Dr Dutta said and suggested arranging her treatment in the United States, as treating her ears is not possible in the country.

He was in the team of Hasina’s three personal physicians who went to the makeshift jail on the primness of the parliament-building complex at about 12:10pm and stayed there for two and half an hour checking up her health. The two others are eye-specialist Dr Modasser Ali and heart specialist Dr MH Millat.

All the three docs suggested the jail authority to form a medical board for the former prime minister and then send her to the USA, saying that she needs her ear treatment ‘on an emergency basis’.

Dr Dutta said he recommended the jail authority for sending Sheikh Hasina to the USA on an emergency basis, failing which she would lose her hearing forever. ‘She needs to be sent to the USA within one or two days as her ear treatment is only possible over there.’

Dr Modasser Ali said allergy on Hasina’s skin has further aggravated, and for that, her eye corners have darkened. He noted that Sheikh Hasina is not confident of taking medicare inside the country so she should be sent abroad ‘immediately’.

Dr MH Millat said she should be sent to America immediately for her ear treatment, as it is not possible in Bangladesh.

‘We suggested the jail authority to admit her into any hospital, but the authority rejected our recommendation,’ he said, adding that the authorities should form a medical board to take immediate decision regarding Hasina’s treatment.

‘Sheikh Hasina is seriously ill, but she is not getting proper treatment. This situation is not acceptable anymore — as she was a former prime minister,’ Millat said.

DIG (Prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddiqui was present during her medical check-up.

Earlier also, Sheikh Hasina’s personal doctors had gone to the makeshift jail and recommended forming a multidisciplinary medical board for her immediate treatment as she developed multiple complications.

The AL president’s scientist-husband Dr M Wazed Mia in a letter to the chief adviser has demanded her release to facilitate her treatment in the USA and her party leaders, including acting president Zillur Rahman, demanded that the government send her abroad for better treatment after her unconditional release.

The ex-PM was arrested on July 16 last year in connection with an extortion case under the current purge in the interim period. She has been suffering from multiple health complications, including acute problems in her ears and eyes.
