[ALOCHONA] Why Remittances so low compared to Pakistan?

I'm sorry. Remitances have reached almost $ 6 billion but still at least 2 billion behind Pakistan's legal and illegal Remittances not coming thru banks. About 39,000 Pakis leave the country every year. I have no idea, how many leave from Bangladesh. Pakistan receives 29% of Remittances from USA.

Thanks for agreeing about English Education. Special Classes of other languages would also be helpful. Immigration to Canada is the easiest and it becomes 15% easier if you know French. French is also spoken in Belgium, Switzerland, in some countries of West Indies, Africa etc besides France.

Greece is most liberal in Europe, granting Immigration and its not hard for a Bangla to learn Greek Accent just like Spanish, Portuguese or Italian. .

Not sure about the comment that the expat remittances from Bangladeshis never reached USD 1 Billion mark ! .

The remittance sent by the expatriate Bangladeshis was USD 6 Billion in 2006-2007 (July 2006 to June 2007). From the positive trend of growth, the remittance is expected to reach minimum USD 7.5 Billion in 2007-2008 fiscal year. According to available published sources, Pakistan will receive circa USD 6.25 Billion from expat remittances during 2007-2008.

I however fully agree with the Alochok's comments that we must equip our work force with the English language and IT skills. The lack of proficency in English has enormously cost our nation, at home and abroad, for the past 36 years. India has a significant edge over us in this respect along with its strong technical and management education base. The standard of IIT and IIM are world class - so is the standard of several other educational institutions in India. This skilled/educated/enlightened workforce is the reason for the success of India - domestically and internationally. As an expat for the past 20 years, I have seen how much in demand the Indian workforce is in comparison to the Bangladeshis or Pakistanis in almost all countries where foreign workforce is required. Even the Filipinos and Sri Lankans are way ahead of us as they produce and send more skilled people overseas. Our policy makers in Bangladesh must assign extreme high priority to ensure that our foreign work force transforms from the current level of unskilled or semi skilled to more skilled professionals in order to take advantage of the growing need of well-equipped workforce in the Americas, Europe and even the Middle East. The important thing will be to improve the general standard of education apart from English and IT vocational trainings. I know it is very easy to say but difficult to implement. However, in my view this is our top most priority if we want to succeed as an economically successful nation as Bangladesh, being a country with limited land and ever growing population, can only be successful if she improves its export potentials, this includes manpower along with the other traditional exports (readymade garments, frozen foods, leather etc).

Shafqat Anwar

Even illiterate Pakis try to enter rich Western Countries legally of illegally first and after failing or not having enough money for Airline Tickets or Sea Trawlers of Smugglers, or not being able to afford to have a fake Visa to those countries try for Middle Eastern countries.

Only one out of 50 entering USA-Mexican borders get caught. More than 600 Pakistanis were caught just in year 2006, meaning 590 x 50 = 29,500 got away.

India has become the biggest Beneficiary receiving about 2 million jobs of Americans in IT Sector paying Rs. 15,000 a month or above.
