Rice talks with India fail

Myanmar keen to export rice to Bangladesh

News Report
Bangladesh and Indian officials have failed to reach an accord on the export of four lakh tonnes of rice by India to Bangladesh. An Indian delegation arrived in Bangladesh to fix the modalities of the export. The delegation held a meeting on Tuesday at Bangladesh secretariat with their Bangladeshi counterparts. Due to stringent conditions set by the Indian delegation about the export, the rice talks failed, said a source.
India raised rice export prices to $650 per tonne recently. Due to abrupt raising of the rice price by the Indian government Bangladeshi importers are now reluctant to buy rice from India. In the international market rice prices range between $350-$400 per tonne.
On the heels of the Indian non-cooperation in exporting rice to Bangladesh, the government has taken a decision to import rice from Thailand, Burma, China, Vietnam and other rice exporting countries. Coarse rice price in Bangladesh stands at Tk 30-35 while fine varieties at Tk 36-44.
UNB adds: The government of Myanmar has not taken any decision to stop rice export or stop issuance of permits for rice export to Bangladesh as reported in local newspapers
Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar has phoned the Commerce Secretary saying that there is no possibility of imposing such a ban in near future, said a PID handout Tuesday.
Referring to the press report that the Myanmar government has imposed a ban on rice export, the handout said it was incorrect.
The government has sought cooperation from all concerned so that no confusion is created in public mind in this regard.
Indian rice export to Bangladesh through the land ports resumes today (Wednesday) after 12 days following relaxation of ban by the Indian Central government.
Indian exporters association leader Tapan Dev Nath announced at Petrapole that Central Commerce Minister Kamal Nath after two rounds of talks with them has agreed to allow export of rice to Bangladesh at 505 dollars per ton under the L/Cs opened before refixing the export price at 650 dollars.
The government agreed to the demand of exporters who had threatened to cut off all exports to Bangladesh through the land ports if delivery of rice already sold at 505 dollars per ton is not allowed.
Some of the Indian land ports also went on strike, said Tapan Dev.
About 3,000 trucks loaded with rice have been waiting at Petrapole to enter and delivery at Benapole port.
Reports from Bhomra, Darshana, Sonamasjid, Hilli and Burimari land ports said scores of rice loaded trucks waiting at the Indian side will deliver the consignments tomorrow.
India has jacked up the rice export price to 650 dollars from 505 dollars per ton and imposed restriction on export at previous price causing anger and worries of the exporters.
Informed sources said a section of greedy Bangladeshi importers were encouraged by rice price of around Rs 13 per kg or 325 dollars per ton in the trading centres of West Bengal. They made large-scale purchases. Those were imported showing the price at 505 dollars per ton and thus funneling out hard earned foreign currencies.
At 505 dollars per ton the landing cost of Indian rice in Bangladesh comes to around 36 per kg. But how those are sold at open market at around Tk 33kg, questioned many.
Price of Indian rice will come to around Tk 47kg if imported at its refixed price of 650 dollars per ton, estimated the importers.
