[mukto-mona] New Humanist Update #83: Russian shocks, Indian piety, French secularism

New Humanist Update #83 (14 March 2008)

The March/April issue of New Humanist is out, bringing with it
exclusive news of Russia's shock election result. While news sources
around the world reported the foregone conclusion that was Dmitry
Medvedev's landslide victory, our cover story by Michael Binyon
reveals the real winner – God.

In a globe trotting issue we also bring you Meera Nanda reporting on
the increasing religiosity of India's urban middle class while in
Tehran Nina Power finds that Iran refuses to conform to Western
expectations.

Plus Joan W Scott revisits the French ban on headscarves which, she
argues, does not amount to a victory for secularism. Back in Russia
(and back in time) Sally Feldman celebrates the life of Catherine the
Great and wonders if Vladimir Putin has modelled his own rule on that
of the Empress of the Enlightenment.

Surveying a new publishing phenomenon Stephen Howe asks if we can learn
anything about terrorism from the memoirs of former Islamist radicals,
and Julian Baggini asks whether Housing Minister Caroline Flint had a
point when she suggested people should be expected to work if they want
a council house.

Also an exclusive extract from our cartoonist Martin Rowson's latest
book The Dog Allusion (The Spectator had an extract too, but it was a
different, not so good, bit). Plus: Laurie Taylor's fascinating
interview with intellectual heavyweight, and his neighbour, Richard
Sennett.

And let's not forget Toril Moi on Simone de Beauvoir, Peyvand Khorsandi
on his visit to Amma, India's hugging saint, Bill Cooke on humanism's
200th birthday, and a clutch of book reviews including quite possibly
the most negative review we've ever run (by Bill Thompson). Ouch!
