India's recognition of Bangladesh was on December 6, 1971 as recorded. However, I have a different story.
As I remember very clearly, it was not India but a tiny and insignificant country recognized Bangladesh first. For political reason, India made Bhutan to recognize Bangladesh on December 3, 1971. With Bhutan's recognition in hand on this day, India openly declared war against the then Pakistan and India itself recognized Bangladesh on December 6, 1971.
I don't have any documented reference. During the months of September through December, I was in Calcutta (Kolkata) and for obvious reasons, I had access to many instantaneous information.
Since Bhutan is a small and insignificant country and it's recognition was merely India's political ploy just to raise a truimph card that ONE country has recognized Bangladesh, its very important status of being the first country to recognize Bangladesh has totally been ignored in the history. It is sad indeed.
