[mukto-mona] Prof. Sibnarayan Ray Memorial Reading and Open Discussion

Dear Friends,

We are deeply touched by the death of Prof. Sibnarayan Ray (1921-2008), one of the great Bengali freethinkers, a critic, poet, the editor of Jijnasa (Quest), former Professor at Bombay and Melbourne
Universities, visiting associate Professor, University of California at Santa Barbara, Research Fellow at London, Frankfurt and Chicago, and the author of more than 50 books in both Bengali and English including four collections of poetry. With his death, we lost such a pundit who not only asked questions on many existing beliefs, but throughout his whole life he also tried to find out some answers to enlighten us as human beings. So, we invite you to join us in a Memorial Reading and Open Discussion that will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 5:30 pm at the Muktodhara Book Store in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York (37-69, 74th St. 2FL, Phone : 718-565-7258 (muktodhara), (646) 244 8566 (Shabdaguchha)). The event is jointly organized by Muktodhara and Shabdaguchha.

Sincerely,

Hassanal Abdullah, editor

A poem

Sibnarayan Ray
This Rare Afternoon
This rare afternoon in the valley of autumn.
Behind the trembling curtain of pine needles
sad sun's gold. On chestnut branches
scant whorls of mauve-tinted flowers.
Drowsy peace falling,
pine needles falling,
touch of elderly sadness in the valley of autumn.
No dark monsoon flashes of passion's anguish
are in this autumn's serene and elderly sadness.
Afternoon of falling needles. Look, there falls
a dew drop and glides down the curved belly of time.
Translated from the Bengali by Evelyn Panofsky
