[mukto-mona] Re: Why Govt may allow detained VIPs to go abroad for tre atment?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46955

For me this is an interesting message. It seems that is what people
with money/power do. They travel to other countries for medical
treatment. The grass is always greener in the other yard!

A relative of mine needed an operation. He traveled to England and
the US for consultations. In the end, he opted to have it done in
Canada and with perfect results.

Another friend had lung cancer. The doctor here told him the
prognosis but he felt that, in the US, the prognosis would be better.
There, they opted to remove his lung and, in order to beat the queue,
he deposited a million dollars at three hospitals so that he would be
called when a lung became available. He got the transplant but he is
still dead.

There are two things to consider about those stories. One is that
people always think that in bigger countries/centers people know
more. And two, people with money believe they are entitled to jump
ahead of the poor.

Remember "Mother" Teresa? She was flown, by private jet, from India
to California when she became ill. Yet it is said that she denied the
people in her care basic comforts and pain medication.

There certainly needs to be a debate around these issues, in my
opinion. However, I am not optimistic because almost everyone aspires
to occupy the privileged position.

Audrey.
