Probably he was "appealing", not "appeasing." His appeal was to those who decide on and make wars. Probably he felt the absolute absence of "living spirit" among the war manufacturers and that is why he emphasized on it. When you don't find hope in the presently available means, you tend to take refuge in the past. Probably that is why he said that "---ancients knew something----" With "something" that the ancients knew, we know, they could not stop wars. Wars have been throughout history. Realization of the danger is spreading. But among whom? Among common people and those who consciously don't want to be part of the state machinery that serve various interest groups.
