[mukto-mona] A Proposal

Land Erosion
by S U Turkman, Washington, USA.

I just watched a BBC Documentary on SonDer Bun. Following are my conclusions:

1. Sea Water is reducing land of Bangladesh Delta.
2. River Water Banks are eroding.
3. Less River Water is making its way to the Delta than before.
4. Less soil is being replenished because of Dams built in India.
5. Not only population but also Wild Life is threatened.
6. Ancient methods of Crop Cultivation and catching Fish are being used.

I want to know, what India and Bangladesh are doing to solve these problems? I think, following steps should be taken.

Proposal:

1. An embankment should be built to between the Sea and Land from Chittagong to Calcutta to avoid further reduction of land by rising Sea Level.
2. Concrete Walls, Rock & Concrete mixed walls or Brick Walls should be built on all River Banks.

Benefits:

1. Sea Embankments should have drainage holes to let excess water go to Sea but since sediments would have already settled-down, only Water would be released in this process, not the soil creating sediments.
2. Presently, more soil is falling in the Sea than the Sediments flowing in from India reducing the land. Only a Sea Embankment can stop erosion of existing soil.
3. The problem of Reduction of River Water would be solved if whatever Water is coming in can not leave fast because of Sea Embankments.
4. Sea Embankment would reduce the effect of Sea Tide during a Cyclone.
5. River Bank Walls would reduce Soil Erosion and would be able to withstand Water longer.

Secondary Proposal:

1. Modern Fisheries or Fishing Farms should be developed on River Banks and Sea Shores to increase supply of Water and Sea Food for consumption and Export.
2. Modern Poultry Farms should be encouraged by the Government everywhere in the Dry lands to increase supply of Poultry for consumption and Export.
3. Modern Sea Food catching Fishing Trawlers equipped with Packaging and Freezing systems should be purchased by the Bangladeshi Investors to export Sea Food.
One may laugh at building of Sea Embankment but if India and Bangladesh try, they can get World Bank loan and donations from rich countries for this. Just a Campaign to build an Embankment has to start and they will come. What you need is a Feasibility Report showing that there would be enough profit earned in the project to pay the loan back thru export of Sea Food.

Example:

Urdu Speaking of Pakistan are 3 times more literate than rest of the Pakistanis and there are proportionately more of them in advanced countries of the world. For the 1st time in History of Pakistan their Political Party MQM had become the largest in Sindh Province and was allowed to run the government of that province without much interference of Islamabad in 2002 and was given total independence in 2004.

With the help of its Scientists & Experts abroad MQM has gotten more loans for Pakistan than ever in last 60 years. The $ 10 billion World Bank Loan, the biggest ever was granted to MQM-run Government of Sindh directly last year for Water Project. This Project would ...

* ... build Water Treatment Plants so, Sewer Water is no more dispensed in to Sea by Pakistan without getting free of all filth and Germs just like in advanced countries of the world.
* ... build world's largest Water Desalination plant Network to reduce shortage of Drinking Water in Sindh.
* ... export Salt separated from Sea Water (in Desalination Process) to Cold Climate Countries, where it would be used to melt Snow on the streets in Winter, making Pakistan the World's largest exporter of 'Street Salt'. 100 % of this Export would be used to pay-off the loan.
* ... build Water Pumping stations to make it reach in northern Sindh ending dependency on diminishing Water Wells and River Water from Punjab.

Punjabis have been ruling Pakistan for decades and no Punjabi 'DHuggaa' Brain could think of this kind of ingenious Project even though they have more of them in advanced countries. Can we please go for the Project that I have just laid-out ...?
