The chairman of a Jatiya Party faction, Anwar Hossain Manju, was jailed on Sunday for seven years, his wife, Tasmima Hossain, for five years and Manju’s cousin, Mahmud Hossain, for 5 years on bribery charges.
AKM Arifur Rahman, the judge of the special judge’s court 10 set up on the Jatiya Sangsad complex, also fined Manju, also a former minister, Tk 1 crore and Tasmima Tk 5 lakh.
If they fail to pay the fines, they will need to serve one more year each in jail.
As the three are in hiding, the sentences will come into execution after their arrest or surrender.
This was the second conviction of Manju after the military-controlled interim government had assumed office on January 11, 2007.
On June 26, 2007, Manju was jailed for five years for illegally keeping liquors in his house.
