PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE

Manjurul Ahsan Khan, President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) attends meeting hosted by Liberation

Manjurul Ahsan Khan, President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) attended a meeting at Portcullis House, House of Commons on Tuesday 6th May hosted by UK based anti imperialist organisation Liberation.

The meeting was co chaired by Liberation Chair & member of All Party Parliament Group on Bangladesh, Jeremy Corbyn MP and Secretary Maggiee Bowden who welcomed all present and stated this was the second meeting called by Liberation to discuss the serious issues facing Bangladesh. Maggiee introduced the speakers who all gave clear accounts of what they saw were the problems facing the people of Bangladesh and what should be one, emphasising that the Caretaker Government should bring its findings to a speedy conclusion, lay the grounds for an election no later than the end of this year, and that the issues faced by religious minorities should get priority on political party agendas.

Guest speakers at the event were Lord Avebury, who said the latest CHT Sajek incident was unfortunate and he was disappointed that the protection of religious minorities does not seem to get priority in political parties' agenda. He criticised the caretaker Government for their failure to protect the minorities in Bangladesh.

Another guest speaker Simon Hughes MP said, that whatever good work has been done by the present caretaker government will be undermined if the election does not take place by the end of the year.

Mr. Manzurul Ahasan Khan highlighted the present situation of Bangladesh including the current state of political affairs, the restrictions on Trade Unions and political activities by the interim administration of Bangladesh.

Others who spoke at the meeting were Sultan Shariff of UK Awami League, Md Kamaruddin of UK BNP, Mr Ohiduddin of UK Bikalpadhara, Asif Saleh of Dristipat & Prasanta Barua of Jumma Peoples Network amongst others.

Jeremy Corbyn MP, Chair of Liberation, closed the meeting by thanking guests who had travelled from Bangladesh for their support and information and to the large number of people who were present at the meeting.
Jeremy explained that the origins of Liberation were in fighting European Imperialism for the liberation of colonies all over the world.  Classic colonialism was now a thing of the past, but economic independence is far from being achieved in many poor countries around the world.  Liberation remains dedicated to campaigning against the effects of free market globalisation.
Jeremy praised the work of the Bengali community in Britain for their support for their communities at home and their huge economic contribution to all of Britain's major cities.
He also praised the independence of Bangladesh from 1971 which included a secular constitution, independent judiciary and elected parliaments.
He expressed concern at the continued existence of the caretaker government in Bangladesh and called for elections at the earliest possible date.  He also expressed concern at the large numbers of pp who have been held by the authorities and so far denied access to justice, including Sheik Hassina, who had been denied access to medical treatment.
In conclusion, Jeremy talked about the need for powerful, accountable and democratic institutions in every society that can ensure the nation's natural resources are retained for the benefit of its own population and not exported cheaply for the benefit of multi national energy and mining companies.
Liberation is holding a further meeting on Bangladesh next month and is a delegation of members will be meeting the Foreign Office in the near future to express continuing concerns about the lack of a democratic government in Bangladesh.
