Zionism in Bangladesh: An Enemy Within?

Of late, a South Asian political expert by the name Sunita Paul has popped up from time to time on the NFB "Readers' Opinion" colum. "Is it a bird"? Wonders Farida Majid, "Is it a bird from Kolkata or a new snoop from RAW"? (May 9, 2008). This knee-jerk reaction was exactly what a majority of the Bangladeshi expatriates/Bangladeshis had been given to Paul's writing. By and large, they have grown up in the particular type of specific historical memory of identity formation where communalism or the discourse of other religious communities is a social fact.

The name Sunita invokes a Sanskrit ambiance – a Hindu culture and the logic of deduction is undeniable, an anti-Islamic. If Farida Majid, Abid Bahar, Habib R. Siddiqui and Barrister MB Musnshi would have gone behind the headlines they would certainly discover another story within a story; that is, Sunita Paul represents the interest of a mighty powerful lobby group in the world, the Zionist bloc which has links to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPA) and neo-cons.

To begin with, if Farida Majid et al take a look at Sunita' s surname it reveals that "Paul" is a distortion of the Kayastha name "Pal". This kind of surname is generally found in the Caribbean region where a large number of Indians settled as indentured laborers during the heyday of colonialism. But that does not mean that the West Indian origins Indians cannot be negative about Islam. Sir V S Naipaul is an exemplary of this group, whose writings and statements about Islam conjure from an orientalist perspective, a civilizing catastrophe.

Whatever the origin of Sunita Paul, it is apparent that she has been patronized by the two- website newspapers: Global Politician and Blitz. Of the two, the later one is a weekly English newspaper based in Dhaka. According to Paul, Blitz is the most influential weekly newspaper in Bangladesh with readership at home and abroad (Global Politician, May 11, 2008). Who edits this world renowned weekly from Dhaka? Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, an internationally known award winning anti-Jihadist and "a gadfly journalist". What does he pen? Choudhury dedicates himself not only against militant Islam but also promotes an interfaith understanding as well as demands relations between Israel and Bangladesh" (Global Politician, May 11, 2008).

One of his admirers Nuruzzam Chodhury characterizes him as a peace-loving Muslim who made a nonviolent approach demanding the recognition of Israel and he declares Shoaib Choudhury should be awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize (Blitz, May 23, 2008). Here one finds areas of congruence between Global Politicians and the Blitz that explain why Sunita Paul was bad mouthing about Muhammad Yunus in Global Politician.

But the story of Zionism in Bangladesh would be unfinished without Richard L. Benkin, a Zionist lobbyist in Chicago, was appointed as a PR person by the BNP government to build its positive image in the United States during the last days of the BNP misrule in Bangladesh (The Daily Star, April 10, 2006). Indeed, the life cycle of Shoaib Choudhury or for that matter of Zionism in Bangladesh is coterminous with Richard Benkin. He serves as US correspondence for the Weekly Bliz and the Daily Amader Shomoy.

For example, Paul copiously praises Ms. Sumi Khan, Mr. Zahid Al Amin of Daily Amader Shomoy, its editor Nayeemul Islam Khan and Motiur Rahman Chowdhury, a correspondent with Voice of America and the editor of Daily Manabzamin for their stance against the Muslim fundamaetalists in Bangladesh (Global Politician, May 11, 2008). Interestingly enough both the Dailies have web links on the homage of Blitz. All this tends to show the US Zionist has a foothold in Bangladesh and there are a number of journalists and writers like Shoaib Choudhury are working closely with the Zionist lobby in the US.

It is not certain whether the Bangladeshi Zionists are working as a social network or an organization, but one thing is sure: Zionism has become a reality in Bangladesh and the individuals like Shoaib Choudhury have invested onto the project a lot of their world views and the justification of the apartheid state of Israel, an American vassal state.
