Dr Bain's assumption that I agree with his view "Nawab Siraj-ud-Doula was a spoiled prince/king" is absolutely erroneous. Nawab Siraj-ud-Doula is to be hyphenated from grandprince Siraj. Secondly, I referred to works Prof Chaudhuri , Dr K M Mohsin etc who refuted the tendentiously slanderous portrayal of Siraj. Moreover, it was needless to state that debauchery and over-boozing was common among the royal family members in those days.
True, some historians portrayed Siraj as described by Dr Bains. But history, wrote Hegel, "is a slaughter house". Those impressions more on hearsay than fact-search are not accepted by dispassionate readers and students of history. But there are aberrations. Wellknown Left-leaning historian Dr Barun De at an international seminar in Moscow that the British rulers were "benevolent depots" and Bengal Renaissance was a "dependent enlightenment". This is nothing but a rehash of Cambridge School historians such as J H Broomfield (who described British ICS officers as "ma-baap" of natives) and David Kopf.
This issue cannot be discussed here.
But certainly Siraj was no Bangabandhu who, Dr Bains is right, was a leader of grassroots people of Bangladesh.
By the way, I am too not a student of History with very little knowledge of history. Yet I do not think defeat of Suraj was less crucial than the killing of Sheikh Mujib . History would have been different had Siraj not been a victim of palace plot. Moreover, the two events cannot be compared as the stages of history were very different.
