[mukto-mona] Siraj & Bengal's wealth

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49466

Mr Kamal Das's love for history is praiseworthy but his comments that the 'prosperity' of pre- British Bengal is nothing more than a fantasy are irresponsible, if not outrageous. Why should we lean on Adam Smith , a great economist but no historian at all. If the belief (historically substantiated by Jadunath Sarkar , leave alone English Records which estimated the wealth amassed by Shaista Khan at Rs 640 million, excluding gold and jewellery. He even paid ,rather bribed Rs 20 million in the early 1680s to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for an extension of his governorship. Sarkar estimated it at Rs 9 crores. Imagine Rs 9 crores excluding jewelleries in today's value) is hearsay-based, was Dadabhai Naoroji's 'drain theory' was all false? What did the colonialists loot? The allegation of loot was first hinted by none other than Warren Hastings in his critique of the top bosses of English East India Company.
We all know George Bernard Shaw's terse comment "A conquered nation is like a man with cancer: he can think of nothing else."
The roads, railways, sewer lines, water works, subway stations, electrical grids in Britain were built on the looted gold, spices, opium, sugar cane, and oil from the colonies. "Entire civilizations were reduced to slavery which destroyed the peaceful village culture of Africa and Asia". Take the policy of indentured labour to run plantations in India, Ceylon and Africa. All this had been a part of plunder, leave alone the destruction of the village culture, the population was at the mercy of the Centralized colonialists. The aim was to create chaos and turmoil. The result was pestilence, disease, and death. Unfortunately, SEZs and land acquisition statute-revision even in West Bengal paves the way for recolonisation of Independent India. About Bangladesh, the less said, the better.

Mr Das or members of Mukto-Mona group of netizens should not misunderstand me if I quote what the late M Basavapunnaiah, CPI(M) polit bureau member said about Arun Shourie (now BJP MP) when the latter wrote a 4-part diatribe against the role of CPI during the Quit India Movement of 1942. Shourie claimed falsely that he was the first to study 800 pages from the archives of the movement and over-blamed the CPI without proper study of documents. MB said , Shourie "is stupidly ignorant". I reiterate, I don't mean Mr Das.
