[mukto-mona] National Mourning Day and government’s instruction to BD missions are hollow

Honorable Chief Adviser,

Please allow me to  convey my greeting and gratitude to you and your governments decision on August 7th to comply with high courts epoch making judgments of July 27th where the High Court declared illegal immediate past BNP-led 4-party alliance government's order for cancelling observance of national mourning day and a public holiday on August 15.

I like to congratulate the government for their courageous move to respect court's decision as well as public perception though it took unjustified amount of time considering the Non Partisan Neutral Caretaker government's assumption of power on January of 2007, and 10 days since the high court's judgment of July 27th.

Like many of my fellow citizens I as an expatriate also found myself in tears of rejoice after getting the news of the court judgment as well as my government's decision to observe the father of the nation's 33rd death anniversary as National Mourning Day. But I got little be shocked when I find your cabinets decision of August 7th could not reach in Washington Bangladesh Embassy even on August 12th in this age of electronics.

Until August 13th Bangladesh embassy in Washington, New York and Los Angeles had no clue on government's decision. On August 11th and 12th I spoke to more than one person including the first secretary all of whom confirmed not receiving any instruction on National Mourning Day. On 13th of August late afternoon I received a call from Mr. Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister in reply of my voice message left in his office telephone. Deputy Chief of Mission confirmed that they received the instructional correspondence from the concern department to host the national flag half-mast

Answering my question he confirmed the government instruction received here in Washington does not instruct to do anything other than hosting the national flag half-mast. There will be no observance assembly honoring the day; Bangladesh Embassy office will remain open as usual with regular hour of operation.

Dear honorable Chief Adviser, I will be very much grateful if you or your office can put in the picture what am I missing! All national print and electronic news media broadcasted your cabinet's decision to observe 15th of August as National Mourning Day and a public holiday then how come Washington embassy will only comply with this decision by only hosting half-mast flag. One can presume whatever instruction Washington embassy received is also received by all other Bangladesh embassy around the world therefore there will be nothing more than hosting the half-mast flag for the father of the nation who gave his life for our nation! This will be a case in point that government complied with the high court judgment as there were no alternative, nevertheless, CTG is not in a position to show genuine respect for the father of the nation other then minimum overt action.

Dear Sir, I think the caretaker government has failed to realize the pulse of the people and their sentiment no matter where they live whether in a foreign land or the dear motherland. We expected after half a decade we the people will have a chance to go to our embassy to lay a flower under our father of the nation's portrait or say and hear a few words about this immortal man called Bangabandhu. Regrettably Bangladesh government failed to understand the rhythm of our heart.

Sincerely yours

Shamim Chowdhury
