Re: [mukto-mona] Siraj

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49543

I am being led to believe that Prof. Sushil Choudhuri is more renowned than
Prof. R. C. Majumder. However, a little browsing yielded an article by
Brijen K. Gupta of Southern Illinois University (Studies on Asia, Series I,
Vol.1, 1960, 9-19) that the revenue of Bengal at Shaista's time(1679-88) was
a paltry Rs.1, 00, 000 per annum, would anyone spend millions to take a
lease on such land. Shaista Khan was sent here not as an efficient tax
collector, but as on punishment due to his failure to capture Shivaji in
Puna, he almost lost his life in the episode.

I have one more information here. After the Buxar war, the Mughal empire
conferred the tax collecting rights over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, a region
of roughly 25 million people, much larger than what Shaista Khan had to
rule, with an annual revenue of 40 million rupees.

I would also suggest Mr. Roy to read P.J. Marshall, East Indian Fortunes,
The British in Bengal in the Eighteenth Century, Clarendon (Oxford
University Press) to get an estimate of the loot from Bengal.

I hate to mention that I am in teaching for 38 years, and I am not ruled by
cheap emotions of winning a debate, or loyalty to anything but facts.
Remember Samuel Johnson's apt comment, "Nationalism is the last refuge of
scoundrels"
