Bangladesh is going to be connected with 'Trans-Eurasia Information Network' (TEIN-3) in order to upgrade the quality of education in the country by reaping the benefits of modern information technology alre-ady achieved by the developed countries.

According to sources in the Ministry of Education, 'Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Taskforce' approved the proposal of the country's getting connectivity with the Trans-Eurasia Information Network on August 11 last.

By getting connectivity with 'Trans-Eurasia Information Net-work' (TEIN-3), Bangladesh will be able to upgrade its quality of education in schools, colleges and universities by utilising the benefits of global research by taking part in those initiatives. It will also be able to enhance its human resources to global standards by collaborative research and education. The network will empower the citizens of Bangladesh with enhanced access to global research information and help Bangladesh to utilise the existing TEIN-2 Applications, like Tele-medicine, Earth Monitoring which include Disaster warning, Oceanography, Climatology and High potential areas; E-learning, E-Heritage, E-Science and so on.

Sources said, to facilitate the plan to have connectivity with TEIN-3, the government is formulating a new project titled "Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project" (HEQEP) for Bangladesh.

The project is proposed to be funded by the World Bank. One of the major components of the project is to establish a national research network named "Bangladesh National Research and Education Network (BdREN). Establishment of BdREN is a prerequisite to get connected with TEIN-3 and any other such global network. The proposed BdREN will be a non-profit initiative which will be owned and operated by the universities and research organizations of Bangladesh.

It may be mentioned that the 'Trans-Eurasia Information Network' was initiated by European Union (EU) to establish connectivity among the research and education networks (REN) of the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative has already passed through two stages and the present initiative is the third one (TEIN-3) where Bangladesh has been considered to be connected. TEIN-2 has linked the Research and Education Networks (RENs) of China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Sing-apore, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. TEIN-3 is the 3rd phase of TEIN network, which aims at connecting RENs of South Asian countries with RENs of EU countries representing more than 3,500 Research and Educational Institutions.

TEIN was initiated with a view to improving connectivity between the South Asian research and education communities and also with the European counterpart, expanding the geographical scope of the network to include additional South Asian countries, sources said.
