Mukto-Mona Invites Articles on the Institution of Sharia Courts in the UK

 

Dear Members,

 

As you may be aware the British Government recently instituted sharia courts in the UK with full arbitration status in matters of family law. There were calls earlier from the Church of England as well as from a couple of British judges asking for these courts and much of Britain other than a small section of the fundamentalist Muslim community was shocked to learn, recently, that these courts had been set up and that they were functioning in the UK already.

 

 

 

 

Some years ago, a similar attempt in Canada was fought and defeated by secular and Liberal Muslim groups and much of the effort was put in by MM senior member Fatemolla and members Tarek Fatah and Maryam Namazie among a large community of Canadian and foreign campaigners. The British attempt has been far more devious in secretly pushing these courts through with full arbitration status unlike the more democratic Canadian attempt at opening up discussion on the subject and then abandoning it when it was clear that a vast majority of Canadians were opposed to it.

 

We have information from Ms Maryam Namazie of the Council of Ex-Muslims of the UK that a major conference is scheduled to discuss this very contentious subject on October the 10th. We would like to invite articles discussing this subject for our website on a special page that we would like to upload one day before the conference. While time is short, we do hope that members with strong feelings on this subject would please take the time to send articles in before October 7th at the latest, for inclusion on this special page. Articles may be sent in in English and Bangla as the writers may desire.
