Re: [mukto-mona] Baba Saheb Ambedkar: Why Go For Conversion?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49946

I agree with Professor Kamal Das that if it is OK to take the advantage of a heinous system, it should be also OK to face the flip side of it. However, there should be a time period during which the historically deprived classes of people in any system should be compensated for their historical deprivation. And that should not be called "taking advantage."

The statements of "Had the Caste system not existed, there would be no Mandal Commission, and the share of jobs would not be favoured towards the lower castes." and  "Without the caste quota, most of these great men would not come to lime light at all." sound very much like "if there was no slavery, there would be no affirmative action." To me, all these statements are wrong, sort of justifying injustices in the history of mankind.

Again, I would support compensation for historical deprivation over a limited period of time, in which the heinous system of the drprivation (such as caste system and slavery) should be totally demolished. As for India, I think the caste system is far from demolished. Now the question is, in this chicken and egg game of caste system and quota, what comes first for demolition? For now, let me leave it to Professor Das and others in this forum to answer/discuss.
