Re: [mukto-mona] To M. Harun uz Zaman

Prof Kamal Das,

I read with interest your response to Dr. Roy.

How does one read Christopher Hitchens 'properly'?

Fundamentalist atheists such as Dawkins, Hitchens and Harris do not
differ much from fundamentalist religionists. They all believe they
are right and the others are wrong.

There is no proof for the non existence of a God, just as there is no
proof for the existence of a God. We simply do not know! To talk
about God, or no God, as 'truth' illustrates a lack of understanding
of life and its mysterious origins.

The ancients looked around them and postulated a God like themselves.
The God they constructed condoned war mongering, power mongering,
murder, rape, incest and all other vile things. In the Old Testament,
it is said that God made humans in his image. We could turn that
around to say man made God in his image.

At any rate, it is easy to imagine man's envisaging a powerful
creator who controlled nature and life and death. There is nothing
calm and easy about life. It is, as Hobbe's said, nasty, brutish and
short.

There is no doubt that science has come a long way. The workings of
the physical universe and the physical body is becoming more clear
each passing day.

However, there has not been one whit of progress in understanding the
origin and purpose of the universe and human life, since time began.

There is a story I like which goes something like this: Hitchens (or
whomever) told God that we didn't need 'him' any more because humans
can make life. He challenged God to a contest. God agreed and they
commenced to make life. Hitchens reached down and picked up a handful
of dirt. Whereupon God said, " Oh no! You can't use my dirt. Make
your own dirt!

The God that man has created seems to be an uncaring, unloving god
and this permeates their religions. The desire to control
notwithstanding, whatever the origin and purpose of the universe, we
can imagine that humans have a miniscule role in it.

One day we may have a more clear understanding but not today. Today
we will continue with our hatred of each other and our desire to be
right and, above all, our desire to control what cannot be controlled.

Thank you for the opportunity to post here.

Audrey
