A leader of the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, labour wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was stabbed to death at Halisahar in Chittagong Saturday night while at least 20 were injured as post-poll violence continued across the country.
With the death of Sramik Dal leader identified as M Khokon Majhi, 35, the toll from the post-poll violence has risen to 15 since the December 29 national elections.
Local sources said some youths called Khokon, organising secretary of Pahartoli unit of Sramik Dal, out of his Pahartoli house at about 10:30pm on Saturday.
His body was found near a brick kiln, 300 yards away from his residence, on Sunday morning.
The police arrested three youths — M Belal, M Idris and Murad — for their alleged involvement in the killing.
The victim’s wife Minara Begum told the police that some youths threatened Khokon with dire consequences for working in favour of a BNP candidate in the national polls.
In Dhaka, a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was injured in an attack allegedly by the activists of Juba League, associate body of the Awami League, at Jatrabari in the city at about 8:30pm on Saturday.
Shamim was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In Natore, at least 18 BNP activists were injured in a clash with the Awami League supporters at Bilmaria Bazar under Lalpur upazila over possession of two shops.
Locals said the clash ensued after a group of AL activists went to Bilmaria Bazar to take possession of two shops of one Gias Uddin at about 11:00am.
The attackers also took away cloths from one of the shops and set fire to another one, they alleged.
On information, the police came to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The police also arrested three persons in connection with the incident.
Four of the injured — Gias Sardar, 50, Abu Hanif, 42, Sherekul Alam, 42, and Altaf Hossain, 51 — were admitted to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex.
