Re: [mukto-mona] 3 BCL Men Expelled from BUET

I totally agree with Dr. Roy here.

In fact, in 1990 or 1991, a prominent Bangladeshi politician was a guest at a discussion program at MIT, organized by the Bangladesh Association of New England. I asked him, why the universities in Bangladesh did not have the campus police forces like the US universities. Both he and much of the audience were of the opinion that "campus police" would be incompatible with the 'non-violent' atmosphere in Bangladesh (as opposed to the 'violent' atmosphere in the USA), and that the autonomous university administrations were adequate in handing the law and order problems on the campuses. I was almost totally alone in favor of my point; and very disappointed.

I still believe that Bangladesh should have campus police forces, with the full power of apprehending criminals from within the campuses. Such forces may be overseen, but not micromanaged, by the university administrations. In other words, they should not need any order or approval from the university administration (or from anyone else, including the city/country government) while a crime is being committed on the campus; they should act immediately to stop the crime.

I am very disappointed to see that the best brains of the country (the university teachers) continue to prove themselves worthless when it comes to providing a proper educational environment on the campus. I find it incredibly unfortunate that generation after generation of innocent students have been forced to waste valuable time due to closing down of the universities due to campus violence. The country's best brains should do better than this.

The law and order inside the University campus should be maintained by its own independent apolitical security forces. I can't understand why it is not being done already in Bangladesh. When thugs create disturbances, police are reluctant to come or rescue. So, might is, usually, right in the University campuses. It's a jungle up there. How administration controls the law and order is beyond me.

I find this as a refreshing news. The university authorities in Bangladesh should do more of this kind of punishing of criminals on the campus. It is good that in this case they did not fear the party in the current government while punishing members of that party's student wing. The government should fully support the university authority for doing their job of maintaining educational atmosphere in the university.

Closing down the university due to fights between student groups on the campus has been a shameful trend in Bangladesh , causing undue sufferings for the innocent students. This irresponsible trend needs to be broken and stopped. The government needs to ensure that the university authorities have the power of punishing the criminals on the campus irrespective of what political party the criminals belong to.
