Re: [mukto-mona] Fw: বঙ্গবন্ধু আজ যদি বেঁচে থাকতেন

A Muslim League leader giving protection to a freedom fighter does not mean he supported the break-up of Pakistan to form Bangladesh. The freedom fighter could have been a relative, and most people do not allow a relative to be killed or brutally tortured even if they think the relative is wrong in his political convictions. Far more strange has been the fact that post-1971 the Awami Leaguers, including the big Bangabandhu, did not methodically punish the criminals who committed heinous crimes like murder, rape and torture in 1971.

In spite of all the limitations that can be attributed to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, it is a disgrace to compare Ziaur Rahman with him. Bangladesh really needs to evaluate its history with truth and honesty, and put the historical figures at the appropriate levels of respect and condemnation.

During our freedom fight 99% people of our country support it

>>>>>>> I agree with that observation. Few years ago I was talking to a decorated freedom fighter (Fought with Khaled Musharaf ) who told me even leaders of the then Muslim league helped them by hiding his team when Pakistani army came to look for "Mukti". Now this Muslim league guy was openly supporting Pakistan during the war for ideological reason but even his heart told him to protect the "Mukti"s. There are many such untold stories which would probably never make it to written history. There are one incident where some Pakistani solders revolted against the Panjabi officer when they were ordered to kill civilians (A story I heard which took place in Comilla, the troop members were from NWFP or Pathans). When they were threaten for life, they still said we'll not kill Muslims (They were told that, Indians are in Pakistan to destroy Pakistan). I feel sad that, there are people who are obsessed to tarnish Ziaur Rahman. There are lots of fair minded people who do not agree with politics followed since 72 in our country. They disagree with both Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman. But to question these two towering figures during our freedom movement it pretty close to treasonous. Bangabandhu inspired the whole nation to fight for our rights and Ziaur Rahman risked his life from day one and fought to free our country. I have no problem if someone does not agree with anti-democratic Bakshal politics or zia's policies during his presidency, but how in hell we question their motives during 71? Are we so partisan and ungrateful? Will it diminish anything from these founding fathers of Bangladesh? The least we can do is to show respect for their contribution for our country. At least we have a free country today. We are not suffering like Palistinians, Irqis or even Pakistanis (Since they are dictated by outside powers!). These great men gave us a free country. Now it is time to ask ourselves, what have we contributed for our country beside finding faults in others and blaming others consistently (Look like it is about the only skill we are good at)..... Going back to the topic of the thread, if Bangabandhu was alive today, he would have been very sad to see how people are selling his name to make money and destroying the country he loved so much. Shalom!
