Re: [mukto-mona] Politics and Democracy – the Bangladeshi Style

The Western powers do what they do based mostly on their real or perceived national interests, not based upon morality.

But I think we the non-resident Bangladeshis should write to our respective elected representatives in our adopted countries to try to influence them.

While America has a cozy relationship with some of the oil-rich barbarian nations, I do think they have gotten to the point of realizing that nurturing Islamic fanaticism in the world is not in their best interests. We can see that even In Bangladesh, where they talked about the so-called international standard of trials before Quader Molla's hanging; but they did not express any condemnation of the execution after it was done.

I think they would be convinced that the low voter turnout in the election was due to real fear of anarchy by BNP-Jamaat, and not due to voluntary boycotting by the public in general. I do believe that the Western powers are going to have normal diplomatic relations with the new government. Although failure on the part of the government to maintain law and order would certainly cause fear among foreign diplomatic personnel and business delegates, which would harm the country in terms of failing to make business deals.

All voters have been provided with required facilities by the EC irrespective of an individual's party affiliation. If one single pol. party refuses to partake in the election that does not invalidate the election, neither does it deprive any prospective voter.  Also, this time there is the UN supervised digitized Voter List (as opposed to the Phantom Voter List of 2006)!

STOP Yunus from lobbying the Western Powers against this election and Sheikh Hasina led Govt.

Again, I believe the opposition had the right to boycott the election. However, they had no right to block it. If they had enough popularity in the country, ordinary people would have refrained from voting. At that point the world would have had a valid reason to call the election unacceptable.

Now, by trying to stop the election through anarchy, BNP would be clouding the judgment of the world, even if we were to assume that BNP had a lot of popularity. Awami League should exploit this after the election, and make sure that the perpetrators of the current crime-spree in the country are brought to justice.

. . . . .........
Clearly, democracy is not in the psyche of the Bangladeshi elite. Looking at the ground reality of Bangladesh, the country needs some good dictators who would not only do good things, but also insist on the next generations of Bangladeshis to grow up to be rational and sensible people. Well, that would need a lot of luck, and I wish my beloved motherland a lot of luck.
