The damage to Sundarban caused by cyclone Sidr has been preliminary assessed at Tk 1,000 crore, according to Amalendra Saha, conservator of forests in Khulna.
Nearly 26.5 per cent of the 41,14,000 hectare world heritage site has been completely levelled to the ground, he said.
The cyclone damaged the flora and fauna on about 30,000 hectares severely and about 80,000 hectares in part, the conservator told New Age on Wednesday.
The forest, shared with India, is home to 425 species of trees and herbs and 246 species of animals, including the world famous Royal Bengal Tiger.
According to reports reaching the department’s Khulna office, the category 4 cyclone wrecked 60 forest department jetties and damaged 12 more in part. It blew away about 127 structures, including shelters and watchtowers, and torn apart 86 others, while totally ruining a pontoon at Neel Kamal.

The department lost as many as 55 vessels to the storm. Four more vessels were damaged but can be repaired, department sources said.
Fourteen communication devices, including radio and telephone sets, were destroyed in the cyclone that pounced on the forest on Thursday evening and continued to play havoc with it till well past midnight.
Officials said the water of a number of ponds in the forest used for drinking was polluted by the saline tidal waves and rotten fallen trees and foliage.
The human casualties, however, were much less than had been feared, with one forest guard killed at Dublar Char.
The department officials are now working on a plan to repair the damage as fast as their can.
